Cadiz History
Having been founded circa the year 1100 BC, you can well imagine that Cadiz boasts quite a lengthy history. Its history dates back so far, in fact, that legend has it that Hercules himself founded Cadiz! fter which came a steady series of cultures: Phoenicians, Greeks, Visigoths, Romans, Moors and Spanish.
The city spent centuries being passed through the hands of one culture after another - Phoenicians, Greeks, Visigoths, Romans, Moors, Spanish - but really began to thrive during the 15th century when it was incorporated into the Spanish kingdom. Soon after, it was Cadiz's port, still one of the most important in Spain, that Christopher Columbus set sail to discover the Americas.
During the following centuries, thanks to trade with the Americas, Cadiz flourished from a seedy port into a cosmopolitan city. The 18th century, when many of the city's most beautiful monuments and buidings - such as the city's gold-domed cathedral - were built, is known fittingly as its "golden era".
