Location

Cádiz has long been one of Spain's main ports due to its location on the peninsula island, joined to the mainland by only a thin stretch of land. It is deemed one of the oldest western cities, having been founded over 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians. The nearby port of Santa María remains to be a bustling fishing port and thrives from its traditional markets and tourism. The Andalusian city is a maze of unique plazas and narrow winding streets almost completely surrounded by sea. Its palm lined beaches are hugely popular with both Spanish and international tourists. This makes it an enchanting place to study the Spanish Language.

Climate

Cádiz enjoys a long summer and it can get very hot, but the miles of beaches are perfect for a refreshing dip after a day studying Spanish! The long hours of daylight lead into a traditional night in Cádiz; tapas, seafood and flamenco. The squares in the historic quarter of the city fill with typical music and dancing.

Carnival

During carnival time Cádiz is swarmed with visitors from all over Spain and the rest of the world as it is considered the third largest carnival after Rio de Janiero and Trinidad Carnivals. The city literally burts into life, as music, outdoor theatre, dancing and other entertainment fill the streets day and night. The cultural offerings transform into a colourful and spectacular week long party revealing the real spirit of the Gaditano people.

History

Cádiz boasts a wealth of history as it has been home to a host of civilizations and cultures like Phoenicians, Greeks, Visigoths, Romans, Moors and Spanish, just to state a few. This curious city began to thrive during the 15th century when placed under the Spanish Crown by the Catholic King. It was from this very port that Christopher Colombus set sail to discover the Americas. When in Cádiz, be sure to discover the many architectural influences and museums such as the Baroque cathedral and the Moorish Gran Teatro, named after the Gaditano composer Manuel de Falla.
