Carnaval

During Cadiz's famous Carnaval festivities, visitors from all over Spain and throughout the world descend upon this otherwise laid-back port city to join in this one-of-a-kind party!

Held just before the onset of Lent from "Quasimodo Sunday" through "Piñata Sunday", the vibrant Carnaval festivities fill Cadiz with fun as the tranquil city turns into one huge street party full of costumes, laughter and music! The highlight is a huge competition in which choirs, quartets, street musicians and other music groups compete for the most original stage performance.

After the competitions, winners and losers alike join in the street party and move through Cadiz's old quarter singing songs, often with risque, erotic or satirical themes. Costumes are a must if you want to party it up like the locals; expect to stick out if you go in jeans and a t-shirt! Keeping with the fun and satirical themes, folks usually go wearing themed costumes poking fun of politicians, celebrities, insitutions, current events, etc.

Early spring is a great time of year to be in Cadiz. Not only is the weather starting to warm up, but you can experience the highlight of the city's cultural calendar! Sign up for a Spanish course in Cadiz , bring along a costume and get ready for one of Spain's wildest festivals!
